May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month! This month, we recognize and celebrate the vital work of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and audiologists and advocate to raise awareness about communication, swallowing, and balance disorders and the importance of prevention and early intervention.

Here at 91ÊÓƵ, the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders and the School of Audiology train the next generation of SLPs and audiologists who will make a profound difference in the lives of individuals with communication and swallowing challenges.

SLPs are highly trained professionals who help people with a wide range of communication and swallowing disorders. They work with individuals of all ages, from infants to seniors, assessing and treating conditions that can impact how someone communicates, understands language, expresses themselves, or even eats and drinks.

Audiologists are highly skilled hearing and balance specialists who also work with people of all ages, from newborns to the elderly, to better connect with the world through sound and to maintain their stability. They can assess hearing, fit and dispense hearing aids, manage tinnitus (i.e., ringing in the ears), and assess/manage balance disorders, among other responsibilities.

Please take a minute to learn more about our Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology offerings at 91ÊÓƵ! We also want to highlight our student organizations, the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) and the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA).

If you’d like to learn more about National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, you can find a nice compilation of materials on the website.

This month, we encourage you to consider and appreciate the crucial role SLPs and Audiologists play in our communities. They empower individuals to communicate, connect, and live more fully!
