Civic Engagement Classes: Requirements & Resources
Paragraphs

The MCCE has a wide variety of resources available for students who are taking Civic Engagement (CE) classes. We can also help you navigate campus systems, find off-site locations for service projects, and offer support if CE projects or experiences don’t go as planned. There are some circumstances where the scale or details of a planned CE project will require advanced consultation with the MCCE.

We strongly recommend that students in CE classes review the following details at the start of the academic semester, and then return to it as you begin your project or experience. And remember that we always want to hear from you – no questions are too big or too small! Email mcce@pacificu.edu any time for individual or group support and consultations.

  • Help us maintain strong positive relationships with community organizations by acting with good character and professionalism as ambassadors of the university.
  • Collaboration takes many forms and we know challenges can arise. Contact your professor or the MCCE any time if you have questions or concerns at mcce@pacificu.edu.

When is MCCE consultation required?

  • If you are planning a CE project and wish to reserve a table or room, request supplies, or book a vehicle from the motor pool: email mcce@pacificu.edu.
  • If you need to request a permit, close a parking lot or street, etc. due to the scale of your proposed CE project: with MCCE Program Manager Morgan Knapp.
  • If you have an uncomfortable experience (e.g. bias, discrimination, aggression) while in the community: with MCCE Associate Dean Stephanie Stokamer (Reports of on-campus incidents should be made at pacificu.edu/support.)

Taking care of yourself and your community

Civic Engagement takes time and involves real responsibilities. Taking this class means making a commitment to others. Please be thoughtful about showing up to meet your obligations but also know that there may be circumstances where the best choice for yourself and your community is to stay home (e.g. when you don’t feel well). In these cases, please contact both the site host and your professor. Students should adhere to both University and partner site requirements, deferring to the most cautious option when there is a discrepancy. If you are self-initiating a CE experience off campus, please provide details to your faculty in advance so they know where you are in case of emergency.
